Module 1 – Reproduce and trace the boot

Page 3 of 3 · About 15 minutes per lesson, including practice.

Boot mappings are not process isolation

15-minute session: read for 3 minutes, trace for 3, experiment for 7, and complete the check for 2. Spend longer whenever you need.

The first milestone identity-maps the first GiB with writable, executable 2 MiB pages. This lets the initial code run, but it does not separate user processes or enforce a write-or-execute policy. The Python calculation is address arithmetic, not access to real physical memory.

Your experiment

Split address 0x234567 into a 2 MiB page index and offset, then reconstruct it. List three protection properties missing from this mapping.

size=2*1024*1024
address=0x234567
page,offset=divmod(address,size)
print(page)
print(page*size+offset==address)

Expected result: 1 True

Practice and evidence

Keep three notes: your prediction, the actual result, and why they match or differ. The completion check grades understanding; the practice task builds skill.
