Module 2 – Test claims and extend the kernel

Page 2 of 3 · About 15 minutes per lesson, including practice.

Require proof, not only a success banner

15-minute session: read for 3 minutes, trace for 3, experiment for 7, and complete the check for 2. Spend longer whenever you need.

boot-smoke.py requires three markers and exit status 33 from QEMU’s configured debug-exit device. It enforces a 30-second timeout and attaches no writable host disk. A banner alone would miss failures after printing. A contributor task adds controlled failure injection.

Your experiment

Read the smoke-test success condition. On a disposable copy, remove one expected marker from captured output and verify that your validation rejects it.

Practice and evidence

Keep three notes: your prediction, the actual result, and why they match or differ. The completion check grades understanding; the practice task builds skill.
